Best Career Advice… Ever?

by Darlene McDaniel on July 8th, 2008

Best Career Advice Ever by Charlene Li is an old blog post, but a very interesting one for those of you are active job seekers or passive job seekers. Here it is in a nutshell:

At a career management course for Harvard Business School alumni, I learned that a person typically gets sick of a job after 18 months. This is a natural cycle, as you go through the excitement of learning a new job, become an expert at it, and then gradually it gets to be routine, So the advice I got was to plan for job obsolescence every 18 months. This didn’t mean that I had to leave the company and go to a new place - it had more to do with redefining my current job first to incorporate new challenges.

Given the economy, redefining your current job before looking for a new job is excellent advice. Is it the best career advice? Ever? I don’t know. What do you think?

The best career advice I ever had, “Get a mentor.” It was great advice for me in that season of my life. I ended up with two women who were very different. Together they helped me develop into a professional business women. I will be forever grateful to them both.

Last year I got some great advice from Liz Strauss, which she had heard from another blogger: Do what you love for people who love what you do.

Hey Brad, Thanks for sharing that advise. It is awesome and I believe I am doing that in my life today. It is really what Interview Chatter is all about. I have the opportunity to talk to people daily about their job search. I love it and I have a passion for it. More people need to take Liz’s advice.
