Ever Have A Bad Interview Experience?

by Darlene McDaniel on August 21st, 2007

Have you ever had a bad interview experience where the interviewer is rude, late or seemingly uninterested in you? What did you do?

Yahoo Hot Jobs! has some recommendations for you as a candidate to consider if you find yourself in this situation.

1. Do A Reality Check
2. Decide Whether To Salvage It
3. Get Back On Track
4. Know When

Here is my thoughts… First unless an interviewer is blatantly rude, I don’t suggest you leave the interview. Sometimes, interviewers create an environment that is highly stressful, intentional to see how you will respond.

Be polite, be courteous, be professional. At the same time, don’t allow people to abuse you. When you find yourself in difficult situations, how you respond speaks more about you than it does about the person who is applying the pressure or being rude.

One of the recommendations YAHOO Hot Jobs gives in their article is Get Back on Track

*Be open-minded. The interviewer may recognize the problem with her behavior and try to fix it.
*Ignore the disrespectful comment and talk about your skills.
*Ask the interviewer a question that will shift the focus to an area of interest to him.
*Keep your sense of humor and make a light remark.
*Ask for feedback or clarification if the interviewer repeatedly contradicts or interrupts you.
Use “I” statements and be polite when you give the interviewer your opinion.

If you have ever had a bad interview experience, learn from it. Evaluate what happened and keep moving forward. You will find a job that will be the right fit for you.
