Excellent Tips for 2007

by Darlene McDaniel on December 27th, 2006

Monster’s Contributing Writer, Carole Martin has 10 Tips to Boost Your Interview IQ. Take a look and see what you think. She began by discussing the need for preparation. I absolutely believe that if you "Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail". Take a look at these tips. I have added my two cents as a coaching tip. Enjoy!

1. Practice Good Nonverbal Communication

It’s about demonstrating confidence: standing straight, making eye contact and connecting with a good, firm handshake. That first impression can be a great beginning — or quick ending — to your interview.

Coaching Tip: If you invest in preparation and you have an interview plan when you walk into the interview, you will carry yourself with the confidence you need to make a great first impression. First impressions are lasting. If you have confidence in yourself you give them permission to have confidence in you too.

2. Dress for the Job or Company

Today’s casual dress codes do not give you permission to dress as "they" do when you interview. It is important to look professional and well-groomed. Whether you wear a suit or something less formal depends on the company culture and the position you are seeking. If possible, call to find out about the company dress code before the interview.

Coaching Tip: Whether they invite you to dress down for the interview or not, Don’t! Dress for success! You will never go wrong if you are wearing a suit, no matter what type of organization or position you are seeking.

3. Listen

From the very beginning of the interview, your interviewer is giving you information, either directly or indirectly. If you are not hearing it, you are missing a major opportunity. Good communication skills include listening and letting the person know you heard what he said. Observe your interviewer, and match that style and pace.

Coaching Tip: This is an excellent tip. I completely agree. If the person conducting the interview has high energy, you can’t walk in dragging your feet and sluggish. Match them and stay with them throughout the interview. It will make a difference in how you are perceived. Also, if the person conducting the interview is the hiring manager, observe their style and pace. Remember that who you see in the interview, will be who and what you will live with for the length of time you are in the organization. If their style is irritating to you in the interview, it will probably get old after the honeymoon is over. Which in most cases is about 14-21 days after you start a new job. Make sure you can live with the style and pace of both the hiring manager and the team members you meet as well as the organizational climate you sense, feel and see.
