Excellent Tips for 2007 Part 3
Monster’s Contributing Writer, Carole Martin has 10 Tips to Boost Your Interview IQ. Take a look and see what you think. She began by discussing the need for preparation. I absolutely believe that if you "Fail to Plan, You Plan to Fail". Take a look at more tips. I have added my two cents as a coaching tip. Enjoy!

6. Use Appropriate Language
It’s a given that you should use professional language during the interview. Be aware of any inappropriate slang words or references to age, race, religion, politics or sexual orientation — these topics could send you out the door very quickly.
Coaching Tip: Just a few brief thoughts to add to this tip. First, remember distasteful jokes are inappropriate as well. You are not there to be the class clown or to determine if the people have a sense of humor. It is not necessary to tell a joke to break the ice. Be Professional throughout the process. Second, don’t add commentary to your answers. What do I mean? If the interviewer ask you to describe your previous boss. Describe them in a positive light, even if they were not very good or you didn’t like them. Don’t add your extraneous thoughts about the boss. Describe them and leave it alone. Allow the interviewer to assess the boss, and your answer.
Here’s a quick example: Describe your previous boss. You can say "Susie is a strong leader. She made sure we understood our jobs, she provided resources for us and was available when we needed her. Extraneous commentary would add, "Sometimes she was only available for certain employees. She was only available to me when she felt like it." Omit those additives. They are negative and will leave a negative impression about you, not Susie.
7. Don’t Be Cocky
Attitude plays a key role in your interview success. There is a fine balance between confidence, professionalism and modesty. Even if you’re putting on a performance to demonstrate your ability, overconfidence is as bad, if not worse, as being too reserved.
Coaching Tip: Another excellent tip. This week, as I was watching "Deal or No Deal" one of the contestants repeatedly said, "If you believe, you will achieve." That is an excellent truism. If you believe you will be successful, you will. If you don’t you won’t. Confidence in your skills and abilities is healthy. You must have it if you want to successfully navigate through the interview process and GET THE JOB. Cocky attitudes tend to come from people who on the surface may appear overly confident, but really are not as confident as they would like you to believe. As has been stated already, preparation is the key. Prepare for the interview, know who you are, know your skills and abilities and be ready to speak to the value you will bring to the organization and any cocky attitude you may have had will be swallowed up in genuine confidence.
