Getting Things Done Contest

by Darlene McDaniel on December 29th, 2007

dice.jpgCeline over at Pimp Your Work is having a New Year’s Resolution Contest. Given January 2008 is a couple of days away, I thought I would cast my blog ballot in the hat. I actually don’t like the term New Year’s Resolution. Typically, people give up on resolutions before the month is over. However, I do evaluate my life annually and make decisions, set goals and do everything I can to accomplish those goals within the timeframe I have set for them.

The number 8 is the number for new beginnings, and with that in mind, here are my goals for 2008:

1. Invest more time with my family by saying “no” to additional volunteer work that will pull me away for more than 2 days per week. In other words, extra meetings and events are going to go away. I will give two days per week outside of my home for the duration of the year. Anything that requires more than that will be declined and I will spend that time at home with my family.

2. Work on my Master’s degree (online program) from home. Take 6 credits per semester this year. Re-evaluate it at the end of the Fall 2008 semester to ensure it works for my family.

3. Write a book. I would like to have the manuscript complete by the end of first quarter. I must write daily in order to reach this goal. I have 4 pages written as of today. I will keep you posted on my progress here at Interview Chatter. The book is about interviewing and the hiring process. More to come in January.

What I like about this contest is it ensures that you write down your resolutions/goals. You are (I am) more likely to do them if I tell someone, and if I write them down. January gives each of us an opportunity to begin again and to shift into a new season. Let me leave you with the words of a song I will be singing on New Year’s Eve:

It’s a new season, It’s a new day! A fresh anointing is blowing my way!

It’s a season of power and prosperity!

It’s a new season coming to me!

I don’t know if you declare New Year’s Resolutions, but if you do I would like to give you a challenge. Write them down, make them goals. Determine small, incremental, daily activities that will help you accomplish them. Don’t give up! Hold yourself accountable to somebody else and set a time to review your progress throughout the year. By December 31, 2008, you will find that you have accomplished the goals. And if not accomplished, moved yourself further down the path towards attaining the goal. Enjoy 2008! It’s a new season for you!

Darlene, I totally agree with your post. I made some of the same “decisions” for myself for 2008. Great minds think alike! Writing them down is essential as is chipping away at them little by little each day. I wish you the best on your 2008 journey as well.

Hi Bridget, thanks for stopping by. I have been gone all day, so I am just seeing your comment. Thanks for the well wishes for 2008. Please feel free to ask about my progress as the year goes on in 2008. I am definitely well on my way with writing my book. I plan to say “no” as appropriate with my extracurricular activities.

My only question, did you write your goals down for 2008?

    Happy New Year!
