Interview Chatter

“He Likes Me, He Likes Me Not” “She Likes Me, She Likes Me Not”

by Darlene McDaniel on December 17th, 2006

The purpose of an interview is to share your skills and abilities with designated representatives of an organization who have a need to fill an open position. Their objective is to find the best candidate for the job. Most candidates walk into an interview hoping the interviewer will like them and hire them. Most candidates are not thinking about whether they are the best candidate for the job, which automatically puts them at a disadvantage going into the interview. Should you be likable? Absolutely! But if that is all you have in your mind, "I hope I get the job." You are not competing with all that you have available. It is more important that you walk into the interview, ready to discuss your skills and abilities. Are you the best candidate for the job? If you don’t know the answer to that question, you are unprepared to interview. Whether the interviewer likes you or not will never guarantee a job offer. What will determine whether you get a job offer is your ability to communicate "who you are and what you bring to the table, to their organization." Nothing more, nothing less.

Happy Interviewing!
