How Do You Say “Thank You”?

by Darlene McDaniel on June 19th, 2007

Thank You Notes are still appropriate today. For a gift, for a kind gesture and definitely for an interview!

Many people ask, “should I send a handwritten note?” “Is it ok to send the note by email?” I would say “YES” to both. Personally, I recommend handwritten notes. It is a lost art and it distinquishes you from everyone else in the candidate pool. Email is quicker and definitely acceptable. So you choose!

By definition saying “Thank You” is a polite way of expressing gratitude.

Guidelines for your Thank You Note:

1. Thank You notes should be sent within 24 hours after the interview
2. Make your note brief
3. Make sure you thank the interviewer for taking time to meet with you
4. Restate your interest in the position
5. Remind the interviewer of the value you will bring the organization
6. Tie your value statement to one of the requirements of the position
7. Your format should be professional
8. Check, recheck and check again for any typographical errors
9. Send a Thank You Note to each person you met with during the interview
