How One Environmental Services Startup Uses Social Networking To Recruit

On interviewing for her environmental organization:
Brighter Planet is an environmental services start-up committed to finding practical solutions to climate change. We’re scrappy by necessity and idealistic by choice. As a growing company, we look for those rare folks to join our team who have a sense of adventure about helping to build a movement for a more sustainable future. Who have their feet on the ground and their head in the clouds. Who can inspire and be inspired. Who are sometimes square pegs in round holes but always passionate, creative, and committed.
We don’t use traditional recruiting methods. Why would we when we are a non-traditional company? We find people to join our team via personal word of mouth. We network and market through social media, like blogs, Facebook, LinkedIn, and our own www.brighterplanet.com. We have yet to use a search firm and don’t anticipate doing so any time soon. Our first contact with a recruit is generally an electronic one. Then phone and, if that goes well, then face-to-face. And not just face-to-face with me, but face-to-face with many of our team. We’re picky. We want someone who brings a new skill or new perspective. That will work well with all of us. And that will find it just as fun and satisfying as we do to build a clean-energy future.
