How Waiting Till The Last Minute To Job Hunt Can Really Set You Up For Failure

by Gina on September 18th, 2008

Now that the economy is in the toilet, some of us who’ve been putting off looking for a job (present company included) are really kicking ourselves for waiting so long to begin an active job search.  Shame on us!

It’s really easy to let things go on and on at your job all in the name of a paycheck.  We usually find that we’ll accept way more in our professional life than we do in our personal life if they’ll pay us enough.  If you’re in a job like this then chances are you’ll eventually reach your breaking point.  FYI - the breaking point is not a good point to start the job hunt.

Although you certainly don’t want to bail on a good job before careful consideration, you do want to know when the time is right to start looking which ought to be before you are miserable.  Here are a few reasons waiting until the last minute to begin the job hunt can be problematic.

  1. If you are in a bad work environment that just keeps getting worse, you may find yourself taking just any ole job to get you out.  Settling is pretty much always bad.
  2. When you finally decide to make a move, it may be the absolute worse time to look for a job.  For example, the economy could have forced tons of layoffs in your field and there may be no jobs available (looking in the mirror).
  3. Your chance of multiple offers is non-existant.  Remember, multiple offers = negotiating power.

I don’t have any great advice on how to know when it’s time to go but maybe some of our readers could weigh-in on this?  Or maybe we’ll get lucky and Darlene will write about this one day (hint hint, Darlene).  Personally, I’ll trust my gut instinct next time.   The feeling was there, but I ignored it for the money.
