Interview Etiquette?

by Darlene McDaniel on November 12th, 2007

Here is an interesting question I found on Yahoo Answers!

Agh! I sent in my resume to a company a few days ago, for a part-time job that pays a bit above minimum wage. I forgot, however, that I had mistakenly put my cell number on the resume instead of my home phone. And, since I don’t regularly use my cell, I missed the original call from my potential employer. He called to set up an interview on Friday, and I only just got the message–it’s past 6pm on a Sunday night. Have I ruined my first impression? Where should I go from here?? Please help!

My Recommendation:

You don’t create a negative impression by not being available when a recruiter calls. When you call on Monday, all you need to say is, you are returning the call and that you are interested in setting up the interview. Don’t mention anything about the cell phone. What you may want to do is give him another telephone number for future calls. If your home telephone is a better number, just let him know. No need to apologize either.

The reason I shared this question and answer on my site is that I have come to realize that there are lots of simple things, I would consider “no brainers” that are not so easy for others. This person was really concerned about the call and was concerned that he would miss the opportunity.

I trust that another reader will find this question and answer useful. Let me say that you are not at the mercy of the hiring organization or the hiring manager. I believe that as a job seeker you do have options and you get to determine what will work for you and what will not. Keep in mind if your values are different than the hiring organization, you may lose an opportunity, but not every job is going to be for you, and you will not fit in every organization, and that has to be ok with you as you traverse the rapid waters of the hiring process.
