Job Search Strategy in a Shaky Economy

by Darlene McDaniel on October 1st, 2008

Do you have a strategy for your job search? During these very challenging ecomomic times, it is not wise for you to be in a job search without a clear strategy. Tim Tyrell has a great post that inspired me to write this one. Check out his post called Do You Have a Job Search Strategy or are you Just Spinning? From Tim’s post he lists some criteria for the job search strategy.

Here are my thoughts on developing a job search strategy in a shaky economy:

  1. Acknowledge that you need a strategy
  2. Set aside time to develop your strategy
  3. Identify what you want to do for work
  4. Identify a secondary job option
  5. Find job descriptions that match the jobs you want to work
  6. Identify the skills and abilities you have
  7. Identify the skills and abilties you don’t have
  8. Measure the percentage of skills and abilities you are missing
  9. Commit to specific daily/weekly goals
  10. Time-dimension your goals
  11. Network, Network, Network
  12. FOCUS on your strategy daily
  13. Identify your strengths and growth opportunities
  14. Practice interviewing skills
  15. Reset goals
  16. Find an accountability partner
  17. Do what you say you are going to do
  18. Evaluate your progress
  19. Track your progress
  20. Ask for feedback often
  21. Work your strategy - Every day

Here is a thought for you to consider: though the economy is shaky right now, and the job search even more difficult, your job search strategy should continue once you find a job. Your job search should be ongoing so that you never begin without contacts or potential job opportunities. You should continue to keep your eye open so that you are never shocked or taken by surprise, should you find yourself in the unemployment line in the future, you should have people/relationships that you are connected to, in such a way that when you are not employeed, your "pipeline" is still overflowing with potenttial job opportunties. I would love to hear some success stories about job search strategies that have helped you land that great job.Tags: , , , , , ,
