Landing the Interview
Other than getting the job offer, getting the interview is probably one of the most difficult steps in the job search process. So many people find themselves in an unexpected job search. One day they are working and the next day they are looking for a job. Some job seekers find a job within a month, others are still looking after a year.
Here are a few suggestions to help you land an interview:
1. Look for informal ways to connect with an organization or key leaders in the organizations you are interested in working for - Networking is an option. But an email works, targeted letters work, and recruiters can help you make an informal contact with an organization.
2. Identify people in your life who will champion you with organizations or key leaders in organizations you are interested in working for. Champions are willing to introduce you, and may even help you to land the interview out right.
3. Share samples of your work, letters of recommendation, or a targeted resume. These items are for formal connections you have made with key leaders in the organization. The key leader is potentially the hiring manager and/or at a minimum someone who can influence the hiring decision.
