Leadership Principles by Stan Toler

by Darlene McDaniel on December 4th, 2007

Stan Toler wrote a handy pocket book called Minute Motivators for Leaders. It is a good, quick easy read for anyone wanting to understand leadership principles. The book if full of quotes, short narratives and inspirational writing. According to Stan Toler “Leadership is about gaining enough knowledge and wisdom to move people and plans from obscurity to excellence.”

Here is a list of some of the principles Stan Toler outlines in his book:

  • Character - Leaders do the right thing
  • Affirmation - Leaders make everyone feel valuable.
  • Communication - Leaders are good communicators.
  • Insight - Leaders understand people.
  • Endurance - Leaders accept pain and disappointment in stride.
  • Movement - Leaders lead people, not institutions.
  • Credibility - Leaders are credible.
  • Teamwork - Leaders build teams.
  • Openness - Leaders accept good feedback.
  • Expectations - Leaders clearly define job duties.
  • Multiplication - Leaders multiply their effectiveness by training potential leaders.

These are just a few of the principles outlined in Stan Toler’s book, Minute Motivators for Leaders. In my last post in this series about core competencies, I asked the question, How do you demonstrate leadership in an interview? These principles should be threaded through the answers you give to the interviewer. Go back and take a look at the questions I shared in the previous post. Write out your answers and include some of these principles in your answer. Give examples of how do the right thing, mentored and developed potential leaders and so on.

Feel free to leave a comment with examples of how you can use this information in your next interview. I look forward to hearing from you.
