Lights! Camera! Action! - For Job Seekers
I trust that you enjoyed reading the interview about HireVue as much as I enjoyed doing the interview with Mark Newman, COO of HireVue.
I do see value for candidates and companies after interviewing Mark. If candidates prepare appropriately, they can really shine on a video interview.
Here are some highlights for jobseekers to consider when given an opportunity to do a video interview:
1. Video Interviews are here. My guess, they are here to stay. My recommendation to jobseekers, is to prepare for your interviews.
2. Video Interviews will expose jobseeker’s - for good or for not so good. If you can’t deliver what you communicate on your resume and cover letter, the video interview should expose that before you ever get in to meet the hiring manager.
3. Video Interviews will be a win/win for both candidates and managers.
For candidates, it will force you to better prepare for an interview. It will force you to get to know yourself and learn to effectively speak about who you are and what you bring to the table.
For managers, you will have the opportunity to review interviews more than once, over and over for that matter. You will no longer be at the mercy of your memory or the memory of others assisting in the hiring process.
4. Video Interviews will provide organizations with multiple options for the question and answer portion of the interview. As a result, it allows companies to weed out candidates who’s skills, and knowledge don’t match the job.
5. Video Interviews will challenge jobseekers to learn how to tell a story.
Behavior-based interview questions would be the model - Situation-Action-Outcome. If you learn to frame your answers to interview questions using this model, you will be successful in a Video Interview.
6. Video Interviews introduce technology into the equation of hiring. If you are uncomfortable with technology, now is a good time to start getting comfortable. Take a class, ask a friend to help or teach yourself, but computers and cameras - technology, are invading our space. Embrace them!
7. Video Interviews can be somthing fun in the face of a very stressful process. Interviews can be stressful. Some more stressful than others. With the Video Interview, if you understand that it is an interview, but the people sitting around staring at you - that element is gone here. It’s you and the camera! Take a deep breath, smile and ACTION!
You’re on, it is an opportunity for jobseekers to shine! To talk about their favorite product! The Product is YOU!
