Interview with Mark Newman, COO of HireVue Part 3

Darlene: What types of companies use HireVue?

Mark: We have a lot of IT companies and some financial services companies that use our tool. One of our IT customers ask some of the hardest interview questions you will ever find. The client may interview 10 to 20 candidates because he is looking for those 1 or 2 people who can answer their very technical questions because of how advanced their technology is. The managers can very quickly assess which candidates they can afford to spend more time with in their hiring process. Some people will honestly say, “I don’t know”. Others will know that it is a program, but they give no indication about what they know about it. While others, will share their knowledge of the program, how to use it, etc.

Based on the answer given, this manager can determine how much training they would need to invest with a particular candidate. For those who know nothing about the program, he would prefer not to spend the time training them. The video interview helps him determine who he can move forward in the hiring process by virtue of his “tough” interview question.

Darlene: I noticed you have multiple types of questions available for use by the hiring organizaion. Do the majority of organizations use the various types of questions available?

The IT companies uses a combination video questions and technical questions. Financial services – they use a combination of questions also. They ask regulatory questions such as, “Do you hold a series 6?” “Can you gain licensure..” They also use “yes or no” type questions. Things you would put on an application.

We also find that as companies use the system more, they feel more comfortable and begin to get ideas on new types of questions they can ask candidates. For example, a company who asked typical questions in the past may add a writing sample question as they get more comfortable with our system.

Darlene: Do you have a series of questions? Or do most companies use their own questions?

Mark: They build their own. Most companies have a template of questions they use in their hiring process. They give us that interview and we put it into HireVue’s system.

Darlene: What differentiates you from other companies that have found this niche in the area of video interviewing?

Mark: Many organizations out in the marketplace are Video Resume companies. With HireVue, the companies select candidates they want to interview for their organizatoin rather than receiving some sort of random candidate generated content. The candidates take their interview, either on-site, off-site or at college career center. Once the interview is complete the manager can log in and evaluate 10 candidates and compare them. If a hiring manager wants to compare answers to specific questions, the manager can do so. Our customers can be assured that the interview is going to happen. The quality is going to be top-notch.

Darlene: What level of employee do you recommend organizations use your tool?

Mark: Both senior level people such as VP, GM and entry level positions.

On the higher end we can save both the candidate and the organization time. If a third party recruiter calls, and says “I want to present you to a company.” If the candidate is traveling a lot. The recruiter can send them a web cam. The candidate can take the interview at their leisure. The recruiter can send it to manager or managers across any given organization. If it works out, multiple people have been able to see the same interview, and they can make a decision to bring you in for a face to face interview, or they can decide, “yes” we like this candidate, and bring you on board.

Darlene: Did I miss anything? Is there anything else you would like to share?

Mark: I would say to companies and candidates, sit back relax and give it a shot. Three, four, five years ago, we wouldn’t have done this. Today you don’t have to go into an office for an interview. You can interview right from the comfort of your home. Lastly, when completing the interview, be yourself.

Darlene: Thank you Mark!
