Interview with Mark Newman, COO of HireVue

Darlene: Let me give you an overview of what I am looking for. I know you were out on my blog and you were able to see my blog, Interview Chatter. The focus of Interview Chatter, is to be a resource for candidates that are out there looking for jobs. When I was in corporate America years ago I was in human resources and training development. One of my big things was coaching and developing people. I enjoyed seeing people move from entry level positions to management positions and also from management to senior level management positions.

So as I am asking questions, my hope is that you can weave your answers around my focus so that it is valuable to people that are in the job market looking for employment. I want to give people in the job market an understanding of HireVue and video interviewing who may have an opportunity to actually use your tools while interviewing for a job. Does that make sense?

Mark: Perfect - go for it!

Darlene: Just a real basic question, which is so typical for interviews – tell me a little bit about HireVue.

Mark: What HireVue is, is a provider of recorded video interview services all over the world. When a person comes home from work, at their convenience they can take their interview from their computer or on-site at a location that is setup. It gets recorded on the system using a webcam. It is very easy to do. When the manager has time he logs in and starts watching it.

Once the interview begins and a question comes up like, “Tell me about yourself”, the candidate has 30 seconds to read the question and 2 minutes to respond.

At first people say, “that’s a little different, that’s a little weird.” But the beauty of the process is there’s no more getting off the plane, going into an interview, sitting across from 3 or 4 people in power suits who are thinking about other things while they are in the room with you. You just get to sit there and be yourself. You don’t have to worry about the “fishing trip and sports team” small talk or anything else. You get to be yourself right from the beginning.

Darlene: Does anyone ever review any of the candidate videos prior to the organization seeing them?

Mark: We stay out of it. We can do a quick quality check to make sure the audio and video came through ok. We don’t go in and evaluate, we don’t go in and duplicate.

Darlene: One of the reasons I ask that is – I wonder how candidates respond when they find out they are going to interview by video?

Mark: Most candidates at a lower, entry level expect to go in and do an online application or testing so there is not much of an issue for them. When it comes to a higher level position it comes down to saving time. And we can save both sides of the transaction a lot of time.

For instance, candidates at a higher level are very busy and might be on the road 5 days a week, but applying for a job somewhere else. In this case, instead of taking a day off of work or leaving in the middle of the day and having to fly out for an interview they can now interview at 10:00 at night after they have relaxed. In other words, they can take their interview at their house or in their hotel room whenever it is convenient for them. This entire process is confidential and candidates have total flexibility.

The hiring cycle may still take time afterwards, but if the hiring manager likes you and they have a good feeling about you after they evaluate you against other people, than the investment of taking the interview at your convenience and not spending time when there isn’t the right fit is well worth it and will payoff big time.

Wow, interesting. Interviewing by webcam can save time and money and is also so innovative. Love it!
