Marketing YOUrself: Been Fired? Tell the Truth

by Darlene McDaniel on April 29th, 2008

There are many people today who lose their jobs for one reason or another. Some lose their jobs by no fault of their own, and others actually assist the organization in their termination by misbehaving, doing something unethical, like stealing, lying, questionable decisions that impact customers, suppliers and the list goes on.

It so important to evaluate yourself, give yourself feedback. You know yourself better than the closest person to you. You live with your thoughts and motives that determine your behavior. So take a moment and be real, honest with yourself.

Have you ever been fired? If the answer is yes, do you say “no” in the interview? Did you conveniently omit information from your resume?

Why did you get fired? Do you take responsibility for your part in the decision or do you blame your boss who was “unfair” or “just didn’t like you?”

What would your previous boss say about your performance? Do you give a glowing assessment, knowing your boss gave gave you a mediocre or poor evaluation?

These are questions that I challenge you to take time to think about… how you might answer them in an interview. Are you tempted to lie or stretch the truth to protect yourself, or mislead the hiring manager? I get a lot of questions from job seekers about what they should say when faced with tough questions like the few I mention in this post.

Let me go on the record and say - TELL the TRUTH. If you have been fired, say so. Don’t allow your “yes” to the question to be the last answer on the issue. Follow-up the “yes” with statements of accountability, and statements of lessons learned. Don’t share all the gory details. Don’t speak poorly of the previous organization, the manager. And don’t blame. Accountability, transparency, honesty, will go over better, than trying to remember a lie later in the process. Your thoughts?
