Net Work Ing - My Thoughts
I had the opportunity tonight to visit a couple of b5 blogs tonight and stumbled on an article about Networking - Networking with Jason Alba, Part one in a 5 part series on Pimp Your Work! I wanted to highlight this topic tonight given what I read on Tris’ and Scott’s excellent blog site.
By my definition a net is a group of people with various life experiences and perspectives. These people and their perspectives are not necessarily visible to you and I by the naked eye, yet none the less they exist. I believe that each of us are part of a network of people. Our responsibility first and foremost is to get connected and to stay connected to this net or network of people. When is the last time you remembered the birthday, anniversary, or some other significant event in another person’s life? Did you acknowledge them, or the event? What was your motive behind the acknowledgement? Were you looking for something or were you genuinely wanting to reach out and touch the individual? No need to respond out loud, just chew on it!
Work by my definition is just that, WORK! Do you work to build relationships with others, out of (here’s that word again…) genuine care and concern for them? It takes work to remain married for almost 22 years! (That’s me by the way. I will be celebrating my 22nd wedding anniversary in a few months.) Anyway, it takes work to maintain good, strong, positive work relationships. It takes work to maintain a friendship since high school. (I have been able to do this one too!). Are you getting the picture. I don’t mean to brag, but I want you to know that I am speaking from some relative experience. I will not say that I have figured it all out, but I am WORKing on it!
Ing is all about action! According to Webster ing means a product or result of action or process. In short in order to have a working net, work for you, you must be willing to put in some sweat equity.
If you are looking for a job and you are relying on your net working for you, you better have invested something before the need arises! Get to WORK and I’ll see what Jason has to say tomorrow! I will be following him on Tris’ and Scott’s blog site Pimp Your Work all week!

[…] Go check out his blog for the dialogue (my answer, his response, and the wisdom in the comments). Don’t be shy to leave a comment - it was great to see some from yesterday from Liz, Carl and Darlene. Also, Thom Singer had an excellent post where he talks about Steve Harper’s (The Ripple Effect) advice on how to wreck a referral network - excellent. […]

Your welcome Jason! I really was inspired by what I read last night on Pimp Your Work! And your response to question one. It actually whet my apetite and I am excited to read throughout the remainder of the week your thoughts! I have a passion for the Hiring Process. It may not make sense to many and I am not sure exactly when it was birthed in me. But as I read your response to question one, I began to think about the value of networking for people in the job search process. I think, we think, we understand what networking is as defined by mixers and events we have attended, but that is truly the tip of the iceberg. The stuff under the surface is the upfront investment we make ( the principle of sowing and reaping) in the lives of the people in our own network. If it is not working and we are not truly sowing genuine care and concern for people, there will be no fruit in our garden to feast on when we need it!

[…] 1. Networking - Networking is more than collecting a bunch of business cards and hoping to make a connection with someone. It is more than calling people you have not spoken to in a few months or a few years. Networking is about establish, nurturing and caring for people. It is about relationship. Who do you actually have a relationship with, that can connect you to a job and/or organization that you have an interest to work. […]
