On A Personal Note - What’s Happening?

by Darlene McDaniel on February 20th, 2007

I decided recently to add a new category to my blog called On A Personal Note. Today is my first installment. I will talk about my personal experiences with job interviews and the hiring process. I am looking for some of your stories as well. I would love to feature them!! ____________________________________________________________

What’s Happening?

Friday, January 19th I gave my employer notice. I wrote a letter and gave a 30 day notice that I would no longer be working there. I was a secretary for the Pastoral Care Department in my church. I worked there for 2.5 years and I loved the job. At the time I had no job prospects, but I knew it was time for me to leave. So, I took a risk and gave my notice. Since then, I worked to transition my responsibilities and train volunteers until they can find the right person to do the job. I also began my job search and interview with a few companies.

Yesterday, was February 19th and I got a formal job offer. I start my new job next Monday. The first question some of you may have is why in the world would you leave a job and not have a job waiting for you? Another potential question - Should you leave a job before you have a job? Both are great questions.

The experts would tell you - Do Not leave a job without having a job. I agree with that answer. But I do believe there are always exceptions to any situation. For me personally, if I had not given my notice I would still be working at the church. It was a great job, but it was very demanding of my time. I did not have extra time to pursue a job search. My time was not my own. I worked to serve a church and the staff in that church, so pursing another job was not feasible. So in this case, I chose to believe that when one door closes another one will surely open, so I took the risk. I believe that answers both questions. My recommendation for you, is that you decide what is best for you in your specific situation. If you can’t afford to leave the job without another, don’t do it. If you can, and you are willing to take the risk, go for it!
