And the Survey Said…
Vault.com conducted a survey to determine whether employers would use Video Resumes - 89% said they would. Less than 20% have used them.
Some of the reasons employers sited for using the Video Resumes include:
1. Gives the employer the ability to assess a candidate’s professional presentation and demeanor.
This is a great reason for employers to use Video Resumes. It is also why I believe candidates should not use them. Who really wins in this transaction? The employer in my opinion. Why? Because most of us think more highly of ourselves than we ought.
Your professional presentation is under the watchful of the employer. Take a look at my friend Gerald Sheilds. Poor presentation at best.
2. Gives the employer a better sense of candidate’s job experience.
I personally believe that you don’t have enough time to give a realistic sense of your work experience between 1-2 minutes. You can give away more than you gain in my opinion. Good interviewers can assess you quickly, probably within the first 30 seconds of your video. Your paper copy will give them a sense of your experience.
3. Employers would use Video Resumes to gauge a candidate’s speaking manner.
I believe this is the biggest reason for prospective applicants not to do Video Resumes. Whether it is your speaking manners or your quirks, or your… - you fill in the blank. Most interviewers are looking for reasons to eliminate candidates from the hiring process. The Video Resume gives the employer too much of an upper hand and you may be out of the process before your really have an opportunity to discuss your skills and abilities.
