Season 6 - The Apprentice - Week 3

Week Three: The Starlite Tour

Recap: The teams were given the task to create a theme tour for Starline Tour. They were being judged by a focus group of tourist on creativity, substance and ultimate performance. Aaron’s team won before the task began. They were excited and positive and Aaron, as the Project Manager allowed his team to think out of the box, be creative and the result: They WON! The tour itself  wasn’t all that, but because of their energy and preparation, they pulled it off and got an 82% approval rating from their tourist.

Michelle’s team on the other hand was lost in the water from the beginning. Her team was in her head, the board room was in her head and she couldn’t seem to shake it off and get in the game. The tour was poor at best. Michelle was indecisive, she second guessed herself throughout. There was very little leadership if any. As a result her team eroded and endured the task to the end. The approval rating was 58%.

Reminder: The team with the most points will always win the game! Simple math. Score points when you are interviewing or you will not win the game of interviewing. It is critical that you figure out what it will take to score big points when you are in the hiring process.

Lessons You Can Use:

1. Quitting - Did Michelle quit because she chose out of the hiring process? According to Donald Trump, Michelle quit. Here’s what I think: By definition, "this is the world’s toughest interview." An interview by my definition is about two entities, two parties, discussing whether or not they want to work together on a long-term or short-term basis. At any time during the process, either party has the right to choose out and end the process. If it is not working - I believe you can say I have had enough and I choose not to continue in this process. That is what I believe Michelle did. Did she quit? YES. Should she have gone into the board room and be fired? I believe she gets to make that decision.

This is an addition to this post after stumbling on Mr. Trump’s blog site about Week 3 and Michelle quitting. Take a look at his comments. I am even more convinced then ever that Michelle choosing out of the process of her 14 week interview was just that - a CHOICE. An interview by definition is a formal consultation usually to evaluate someone’s qualifications. If that is true, and it is. Based on what I know, either party can terminate the interview at any point in the process. That is truly what Michelle did. Why go through the brutality of the boardroom. It wasn’t necessary. For all the opinions about whether she quit, including Mr. Trump’s opinion, Michelle ultimately made a CHOICE. And we all have the same option. Whether we are in a 14 week interview with Mr. Trump or whether we are interviewing for a much less visible organization.

2. "Never underestimate the power of your of your attitude."  If you think you can’t you’re right. It is that simple. If you are not in a good place emotionally, mentally, you probably should not go to the interview. You are wasting your time and you are wasting the time of the hiring manager.

Side Note:

I was very impressed with Aaron, James and Stephani this week. They each stepped up and demonstrated strength, leadership, rapport, toughness, and a willingness to go the extra mile. That said, I am pulling for their team to win, however, I believe they have some dead weight in Frank and Nicole. Frank is atrocious and needs to go home soon. The longer he hangs around the more confident he will become. He thinks he can compete and that is simply not true. My prediction is that Frank and Nicole will not be The Apprentice. I want to go on the record early. That is my assessment. Are there others? Yes, for obvious reasons, only one can be the next Apprentice. But those two for sure, I want to be on the record concerning their ability to win. More to come!
