So, What Are You Going To Do About It?

by Darlene McDaniel on July 13th, 2007

Ok, so you got feedback or you gave yourself feedback. What do you do with the information you recieve? Well, like most people, you could ignore it. You could do nothing and you can continue to do what you have always done.

“If you keep doing what you’ve always done, yet you expect different results” you are operating from insanity. So, what are you going to do with this feedback?

Here’s what I recommend:

Once you receive the feedback, it is very important that you evaluate the feedback you receive. How do you evaluate it?

1. Ask yourself, “Is the feedback I received true?” This is a very important question. If you answer “no” to quickly, and walk away from it, you may miss an opportunity to grow. So how do you know if the feedback is true?

First, have you heard the feedback before? Go back in the database of your mind, and move through the file cabinet and see, has someone else given me this feedback before? If the answer is “yes”, I have heard this before, then slow down and evaluate it. Here’s my rule of thumb, two is a pattern.

Two is a pattern means, if you have heard the feedback before, I want you to consider the feedback could be true. Ultimately, you have to decide, but if this is not the first time you have heard this feedback, you can’t just blow it off. Well, you could, but I don’t recommend it. Consider that the feedback could be true.

2. Once you determine whether the feedback is true or false, either way, the next question is, “What are you going to do about it?” This question is a critical question.

Whatever you do, whatever you decide remember my definition of feedback - Information given to communicate satisfaction or dissatisfaction with an end result of improvement for the receiver.

Feedback should be about growth. In the case of an interview, if you are not getting the jobs you want. If you can’t get the interview, evaluate what is going on. Where do you need to make adjustments. Take your eyes off the interviewers, and the organizations. The only person in this transaction that you can truly change is you. Make the necessary changes or adjustments and then jump back into pursuing the jobs you want.
