So, You’ve Been Fired

Is there hope for you once you’ve been fired? Or are you doomed to negative perceptions and bias because of poor performance, insubordination, personality conflicts? Are you doomed to lesser jobs?

Recovery from a termination seems like an uphill battle for job seekers who find themselves facing interview questions about their previous employer. I have been looking for solutions, practical solutions to help you get over this hurdle.

The things that are critical for you to remember as a job seeker if you have been fired are: Honesty & Accountability. It is extremely important that you tell the truth and that you take responsibility for your part in the termination. I want to stress these two things because most people don’t want others to know the detail. And many times it is difficult to see your culpability in a given situation.

I don’t believe that a man is the sum of all his actions unless he/she gives up and stops moving and growing. If however, you allow difficult situations to grow you, to strengthen you, to change you, then the you are still working through the result of who you will be.

If you have been terminated, fired for cause, I challenge you to take some time to evaluate what happened. Go back and look for the times you made a decision or a choice based on feedback given by your boss. What decision did you make that allowed the situation to continue to escalate? The answer to this question will help you get to the place of accountability.

Practice discussing what you will say. Make sure all frustrations have been dealt with so that it doesn’t come through in the interview.
