Sorry I’m Tardy: Being Late For The Job Interview
Today I sat in my office listening to patient after patient come in late for their appointment, apologizing profusely to the receptionist and trying to justify their tardiness. That got me thinking about how stressful it would to be late for a job interview.
I found a really great post on The Career Encouragement blog that says that how you handle being late for an interview can tell the interviewer a lot about you. So, for how to handle yourself post-tardiness, I’ll direct you there. But by all means, there are things you can do to prevent tardiness.
Before the day of your interview, take a test drive to the location. This is especially important if you live in a larger city like Chicago where you’ll need to find parking and it’s even more important if you are unfamiliar with the area the interview is taking place. Factor in the traffic and if you can spare the time, leave really early so that nothing aside from an external disaster will prevent you from arriving on time. Use the extra time after you arrive to calm yourself and review your interview plan one last time.
These days everybody has a cell phone so by all means, if you are not at the interview a few minutes before, be sure to call ahead to let them know you are running late. This will be uncomfortable but not as uncomfortable as knowing you’ve kept a busy manager waiting on you.
