The Importance Of Keeping Track Of Your Accomplishments

by Gina on August 5th, 2008

By now we all know the importantance of regularly updating our resume but the act of updating it can be rather daunting, especially if it’s been a while since the last update.  There is one thing we can all do to make updating our resume a lot easier.

Start a “Stuff I did that totally rocked” list.  Call it whatever you like, the point is to keep track of your accomplishments as they happen.  That way, when it’s time to update your resume, you won’t risk forgetting that awesome project you worked on that could land you your next job.

It never fails that I start to update my resume and can’t remember really important accomplishments from the previous year.  It’s really embarrassing when you have to ask your friend/coworker “have I done anything good this past year that you can think of? I’m updating my resume and I can’t remember.”

Do you have any tips or tricks for making resume updating easier?

Here’s one: Start a “career diary” of sorts that you update weekly, monthly, quarterly, or whatever suits you best. Take note of things you did that had a positive impact on company or division growth, along with any compliments that came with them.

Here’s another: Have you received any written commendations via e-mail? Send them to your home e-mail account and drop them in a folder for easy reference. Add background information for each of them so that you have a “complete story” to rely on.
