Top 8 Jobs of 2008

by Darlene McDaniel on March 11th, 2008

Here is an interesting article I found on Fastcompany.com, The Top Jobs 0f 2008. If you are looking for a new profession, you may want to consider one of these. I am listing the professions listed in the article and my comments will follow. What do you think?

ab02082026531.jpg1. Teacher

I am not surprised about Teacher being on the list. Think about the educational system across your country and even the world. We do need people with a passion for shaping lives and destinies. I highly recommend that you have a passion to teach, and to touch lives. We don’t need any more people who are uninspired and weary teaching future leaders.

2. Computer Software Engineer

Science, math and technology. This is a great category of jobs and there lots of places to get education or training.

3. Social and Health Services

This is a good choice for compassionate, caring people. These opportunities will continue to grow due the growing number of people aging. Here is an interesting post I wrote back in December about Preparing for Careers in Health Services.

4. Sustainability Experts

greenerassets.jpgHave you grown green over the last few years. Do you have a passion for our environment. there are actually job boards designed for companies and candidates looking for employees with a passion for Green. Greener Assets here at the Business Channel is a great place to glean information about the business and the environment. Check out Alison’s category on Green Jobs.

5. Peace Corp Workers

This organization is a great place for young people and older people who are looking for an opportunity to travel and serve. I have a friend who spent two years in the Peace Corp and it set the course of her life.

6. Nurse

This career choice is one of the oldest. I am always amazed at how many nursing jobs are available in most cities in the US. There are lots of ways to fund your education if you wanted to make a career change. Similar to the Social and Health Services category, it is a vocation that needs compassionate, caring people.

7. Franchisee

franchisepick.jpgWOW! I agree with this category. I am somewhat surprised that it is on the list, but it an absolutely great choice. Becoming a Franchisee affords you the opportunity to be in business for yourself using someone else’s successful model. Check out Franchise Pick here on the Business Channel. Sean always has tons of information about the many Franchises available for you to hang your shingle “Open For Business”.

8. Veterinarians

WOW again! I am surprised this made career made the list. You can probably tell there is some bias here. I am not much of an animal lover. I love cats and like a few other animals, but I digress. If you are an animal lover, this may be the profession for you. Don’t let my bias sway you.

Bonus Categories

1. Home Business

There are a number of Home Businesses out there, and there are even more that have not been created yet. I would encourage you to consider this category as an option if you are not interested in getting back in the traditional work environment. Check out Home Biz Notes. Mary Emma and Yvonne have a tremendous amount of information on their blog that will help you not only move in the direction of entrepreneur but that have great recommendations on how to keep you be successful.

2. Writers

From Freelance writing, writing articles, to writing books or blogging, you can make money, and be successful writing. Check out The Golden Pencil. Anne always has writing jobs included on her blog.

Interesting list, Darlene. Thanks for sharing. Teaching, though, depends on the area where you live. Here in central NH, schools are cutting back on teachers (sometimes because of fewer students entering and other times because of budget constraints), so it’s often difficult with those with teaching credentials to find a job.

Thanks for mentioning Home Biz Notes as a resource for those considering home businesses.
