Video Instruction: Social Networking - Facebook

by Darlene McDaniel on June 6th, 2008

Until my daughter went to college last year, I really didn’t have an understanding of Facebook. Facebook by their definition is a social utility that connects you to the people around you. Facebook allows you to:

  • Keep up with friends and family
  • Share photos and videos
  • Reconnect with old classmates

During her orientation, many of our facilitators, heads of departments discussed Facebook. The school my daughter attends evaluates Facebook for all students, but they really look at incoming Freshman. There is an old saying that “a picture tells a thousand words.” If there is anything I could stress to young people, Facebook, may be fun right now. You can let it all hang out with your friends, but when you get ready for a job, unless your friend is the hiring manager, what you share on Facebook may come into play and ultimately you may lose a job opportunity.

Take a look at this video from YouTube : My Space Facebook: Employers are Watching. You judge for yourself. Feel free to scroll down and leave a comment.

Hmm… I always wonder how this allowed since access to people’s profile are only if you’re friends with them or you are in the same network.

    Definitely make you think twice…

Hi Jenn! Thanks for visiting Interview Chatter. Interesting question. My quess is that your leaders are connected to people you are connected to. All they need is one person that knows someone that knows you. The whole idea is connecting to people. The one thing young people forget is that it is not the world according to them - their perspective. It only takes one person knowing someone that you know connecting and giving them access to all of your friends. etc. More food for thought!
