Virtual Interview @ Second Life

by Darlene McDaniel on June 20th, 2007

Maybe you have always dreamed of being a chemist, a dentist or a lawyer, but for some reason, you just can’t seem to find the time to go to school and get the education you need. Maybe your Second Life can get you that job!

I am kidding, sort of… I read an article today in the Wall Street Journal by Anjali Athavaley called “A Job Interview You Don’t Have to Show Up For”, Microsoft, Verizon, Others Use Virtual Worlds to Recruit; Dressing Avatar for Success.

What an interesting article. What an interesting concept. Interviewing with an Avatar of your selection. I have never heard of such a thing. Not to mention the virtual community called Second Life.

I made an attempt to visit their site tonight. I created an Avatar Julene Janus. Kind of a cool name. I did actually walk around in the virtual world tonight. It was very interesting. I can’t imagine conducting a virtual interview though but certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

I have not landed yet on whether I like this concept of interviewing virtually. I need more data. But I am curious. The job fair that Microsoft, Verizon, and others tested last month was relatively successful according to the article.

I am interested in attending the upcoming job fair in August. In the mean time, I will share more of my thoughts on this concept of virtual interviewing. Tonight, I am just sharing my initial thoughts. I need more data. I would love to hear from anyone who may have attended the virtual job fair over at Second Life.
