So, Whose Hiring?

by Darlene McDaniel on November 18th, 2008

If you are looking for a job to get you through these tough times, than keep reading. There are companies hiring right now as we move into the holiday season. I stumbled on an article from Forbes.com, Who’s Hiring For the Holidays? Industries that are currently hiring include retailers, fast food, and health care. These jobs may not be at the top of your job search strategy, however if money is an issue for you, getting your bills paid, an undesirable job maybe better than no job at all.

Keep in mind that the competition for any potential job you may be considering will be fierce. There are many people on the hunt for a job. Some things to keep in mind as you consider holiday employment:

1. Don’t assume that you will be hired because of your maturity - Prepare to explain why you are currently in the job market

2. Take some time to determine why you should be hired for the position you are considering.

3. Continue your job search for job you really want

4. Remember that your job search may stretch into 2009 - Prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for a potentially long job search.

5. Understand that your emotional baggage will hinder you from getting hired. Eject the baggage and commit to working for a new employer no matter what things you have been through in the recent or distant past.

holiday-work.jpgSo whose hiring? Start with UPS and Fedex. Also, ToysRus. JC Penney, and Sears. They are hiring for the holiday season. Also, check out your local hospital. Even if you are not trained in the medical field, there are lots of jobs available that require no medical experience. My purpose in writing this post is to encourage you to get out there and see that there are some jobs available. It may not be in your field or your preferred profession, but work is available. Seasonal work will get you through the remainder of this year and into the new year. I have named a few organizations, there are more. Don’t limit your vision, or be too picky in this holiday season. If you need to work, and you can’t afford to stay home right now, then pull yourself together and get out there. It is an employers market. They can afford to be picky, so present yourself well.

There are some helpful tips here. The other site I would highly recommend looking at is LinkUp.com which aggregates and publishes jobs pulled directly from the career sections of company web sites themselves. There are roughly 500,000 from over 10,000 companies and the listings are always current, there are no duplicates, and there are no listings from staffing companies, headhunters, work-at-home scams, etc. When you apply to a position on the site, you are actually applying directly to that company’s web site or applicant tracking system. Perhaps more importantly, the search/match quality on LinkUp.com is much higher than any other job site because the job listings themselves are much longer and more thorough given that companies are posting the listings on their own company site. This allows for a much more granular, highly specific search query. And finally, the jobs found on LinkUp.com are often unadvertised anywhere else on the web. I of course am biased, but I’d argue that LinkUp is the best jobs site on the web today.

I know that the base of the article is discussing the needs of seasonal hiring, however I wanted to offer a little encouragement. I see the market as everyone does, the employment numbers, etc. and it is easy to get dismal and think - oh what are we going to do now. But be of good cheer, there is hope.

The media unfortunately for various reasons tends to play the role of propaganda most of the time. Taking an idea, running with it, and by the time we get to the end - leaving little of the original meaning. So when I look and hear of the layoffs, I notice little to none discussing of the companies that are hiring - and there are a lot of them.

Companies have a strong amount of work that needs to be done even in the midst of layoffs and economic uncertainty. These roles are being filled by contractors. The serial contractor is not the person filling the role, but more importantly the direct hire employee is learning that the way people work, and the relationship between employer - employee is changing. When people see and understand that, they open their eyes to the opportunities that are present and available.

In summary, companies are hiring. We just need to be looking through the right lens to ensure we are seeing them and not cutting them off at the knees since they are “contract roles’.
